Prof Emily Akuno opens Information Skills Workshop for Academic Staff

The library held a akunoone day workshop for academic staff on 25th May 2017. The workshop attracted 30 participants

The workshop was opened by Prof Emily Akuno, the Deputy vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs). In her remarks, Prof Akuno said that the conference was spot on as academicians were going to set the standards of how things should be done. She pointed out that the only universities that were going to survive were those that would be able to use the right strategies. She said that if the lecturers can learn how to access the e-resources then they can pass it on to the younger ones since the physical hard copy printed books will not always be there for users. The DVC also thanked Esther Obachi for her time and effort to share her expertise.
The morning session covered e-journals and e-books, reference management and citation software (Zotero). Google applications to facilitate collaboration, design research survey and track citations using Google scholar was also covered. Other topics included creating a researcher ID. Researcher ID provides unique identifiers to resolve author ambiguity or distinguish publishers with similar names or name changes. https://orcid.org/ , http://www.researcherid.com/

The afternoon session focused on key factors to consider when choosing the right journal to publish. The facilitators were Jane Gikandi, Victor Njogu and Esther Obachi of University of Nairobi The participants commended the facilitators of the workshop and suggested that such workshops be organized more often.
