The Ag. Vice Chancellor of The Co-operative University of Kenya Prof. Kamau Ngamau joined the Kenya’s co-operative movement in marking the co-operatives’ environmental day on Saturday 10th June 2017 at Jamhuri park Nairobi. The annual event in the run up to the International day of co-operatives to be marked on 1st July, 2017 worldwide was presided over by Mr. Muchiri Stanley who is the President of ICA Africa and Chairman of Co-operative Bank in Kenya.

 

Addressing the cooperators at the cooperatives’ corner at the Jamhuri park, Prof. Ngamau decried the impacts of climate change that have hit hard the humanity, “Here at home, we have had a severe drought in the year and this has had severe impacts on food shortage, loss of animal and plant lives and worse of all human lives especially for the rural poor in marginalized lands.”

 

He urged the vibrant Kenya’s co-operative movement to take lead and do more to conserve the environment. He noted that the movement using its numbers, can easily change the narrative of environmental degradation. He reiterated the commitment of The Co-operative University of Kenya to conserving the environment noting that the world remains endangered by adverse climatic and weather conditions.  Other organizations that attended the event included the Co-operative Bank of Kenya, KUSCO limited, CIC group, Shirika Sacco among others.
