The Co-operative University of Kenya is set to leading the vibrant co-operative sector in Kenya into embracing ICT usage in their operations. Hosting a two-day workshop of all key players in the sector in the Countrywide at the University on 22nd and 23rd March, 2017, CUK remained upbeat in revitalization and providing the relevant research and education framework to a successful end. The workshop under the theme “Embracing ICTs in Co-operatives for Sustainable Development” brought on board the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Co-operatives, CEOs of pilot Saccos and Co-operatives other partners in ICT sector including the Intrasoft International, and Kipepeo Imaging who are at the forefront of the project.

CUK’s Ag. V.C Prof. Kamau Ngamau, opening the workshop reiterated the commitment of The Cooperative University Kenya in playing its major role in education and research for the co-operative sector to ensure meaningful growth and providing valuable human resource capacity for the movement. He asserted that, “The responsibilities ahead of us in driving the agenda of Cooperatives in the country are enormous. However, given the blend of your enthusiasm, experience in the sector and your willingness to serve; I have no doubt in my mind that you will contribute tremendously to the advancement of the movement.” Further the university is set to be the date canter for the co-operative movement in the country.

The Co-operative University of Kenya is set to work progressively with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Co-operatives, the Intrasoft International, Kipepeo Imaging and the entire co-operative movement to ensure that the co-operatives are not left behind as the country moves forward in embracing the ICT as it remains the pivotal point of turnaround in business development. “By embracing ICTs in Saccos, we open up new markets, new membership, new business ventures that goes beyond our locality,” he said.

The two-day workshop organized by the Institute for Co-operative Development at the university led by Prof. Esther Gicheru has over time registered remarkable progress in propelling the university to its mandate. The Cooperative University of Kenya, with its partners including the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Co-operatives, The county Governments and development partners, has endeavored to giving singular focus to a number of activities including Harmonizing and improving the quality of cooperative education and training programmes, Developing an efficient marketing system through product improvements, value-addition and market research, helping in Restructuring and strengthening the management of cooperative institutions and organizations, Promote new cooperative ventures in disadvantaged areas and encouraging Incorporation of ICT into the sector’s operations among other policy interventions.
