THE 1ST CONGREGATION OF THE CO-OPERATIVE UNIVERSITY OF KENYA

webThe Co-operative University of Kenya (CUK) held its 1st Graduation Ceremony, Inauguration of the Pioneer Chancellor and Charter Award Celebrations on Friday 18th November, 2016. The colorful event presided over by the Chancellor Hon. Dr. Joseph Nyagah hosted high profile guests including the Kenya’s Education Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred. O. Matiang’i, Principal Secretary, State Department of Co-operatives Mr. Noor Ismael among others. A total of 1,148 students graduated with 351 graduates conferred various degree, 675, and 121 awarded various diplomas and certificates respectively.

On the same day, The CUK’s Pioneer Chancellor Hon. Dr. Joseph Nyagah, on a twin event of his inauguration,  was conferred an Honorary Doctorate Degree (honoris causa); Doctor of Co-operative Business of The Co-Operative University of Kenya owing to his immense service to humanity and contribution to the Co-operative movement in Kenya, Region and Africa.

On his part, Education CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i urged the University to keep the spirit of Quality Training urging CUK not to obliterate the quality of graduates from the institution’s tradition. He further lauded CUK for being among the only five Public Universities in Kenya that have met the ethnicity bar in terms of the staff employment/ recruitment. Congratulating the graduands, Dr. Matiang’i reiterated that The Co-operative University of Kenya is one of the most specialized universities in Kenya, strategic enough to unlocking the Kenya’s economic potential owing to its niche for the co-operative movement sector which controls over 45% of Kenya’s GDP.

The University’s Council chairperson Dr. Gladys Mwiti expressed her excitement and that of the University Council at the ceremony and noted that the University is expected to grow fastest on award of the Charter. She marked that the development projects set out in the strategic and master plans, set for completion in the next 2-3 years are the game changer to the University’s future. Key on record are the University’s Lecture Theatre and Learning Resource Center projects the later estimated to cost about Kshs. 2 billion.

The University’s Ag. Vice Chancellor Prof. Douglas Shitanda noted that the award of Charter to The Co-operative University of Kenya by the President of the Republic of Kenya H.E Uhuru Kenyatta on 7th October, 2016 was the turning point to the University’s growth and prosperity. In his address to the congregation, Prof. Shitanda expressed confidence that CUK was headed for great growth dimensions moving forward.
